Jim Aherne - Project Director

This is a powerful and moving production and the performances come across as an authentic portrayal of the life of asylum seekers in Ireland, as a family and as individuals dealing with the restrictions and conditions imposed by the state. It shows the constraints placed on normal family life by the rules of hostel living, the lack of privacy and the difficulties of institutionalised approach to provision of meals. It is hard to believe that Ireland of the 21st century expects a family of four to share one bedroom. It also showed the confusion and restrictions on access to education for an asylum seeker who wishes to improve his skills and qualifications. The incident portrayed in the final scene reflected many of the misguided assumptions that are made about the provision of mobile phones etc. for asylum seekers.
In the Forum Theatre style, the audience are invited to question the characters about their experiences and to suggest alternative approaches. This helps to give greater insight into the characters in the play and to explore other possibilities.
